The Hollis F. Price Library’s mission is to provide reference and instructional services to the college community and to ensure that students and faculty members have access to essential resources.
The Hollis F. Price Library was named after Dr. Hollis Freeman Price (1941-1982) the first African American President of LeMoyne-Owen College. The award-winning facility features an astounding mosaic mural by renown New York artist, Ben Shahn. In addition to a collection of books, periodicals, DVDs, CD’s and special collections, the Hollis F. Price Library has an online catalog, electronic databases, access to the countless sources and desk top workstations. You may also check out laptops, digital cameras, scientific calculators, ear buds, flashdrives and video recorders.
The Library of Congress Classification System is used to locate all materials. The Hollis F. Price Library is staffed by five professionals who have years of experience to support and assist your research, writing and development needs.
The Hollis F. Price Library houses a collection of more than 120,000 volumes and subscribes to more than 300 periodicals. The library provides open-access to the entire collection. Seating capacity is 300. The library is open six days per week while classes are in session.
The library’s Sweeney Collection, named after former college president Frank Sweeney (1929-1940) is a special collection of books by and about African Americans that contains over 8,500 volumes. The collection includes many rare first editions including titles that date back as far as 1858.
The library also houses the College archives, materials that document LeMoyne-Owen College’s history. The archives include the papers and publications of past College presidents, faculty members, and alumni. The Archives also include catalogs, graduation programs, newspapers, obituaries, yearbooks, and lots of photographs.
The library has reciprocal borrowing agreements with the University of Memphis, Christian Brothers University, Rhodes College and Southwest Tennessee Community College. Our students can borrow from the respective collections by showing their college ID. Check their websites for locations, times, and restrictions.
Library instruction is provided during the fall semester through the Freshman Seminar experience. Sessions for subject specific classes are available throughout the academic year and during summer sessions. Numerous topics are covered including: circulation policies and procedures, and research strategies and resources (print and electronic). The librarians can assist in planning assignments, preparing the research paper, training for using the Internet and software (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and supplying bibliographies or lists of appropriate resources (i.e., electronic resources).
The Library observes the American Library Association (ALA) guidelines in regard to the confidentiality of Library records. The circulation records and other records that identify a patron name with specific materials are held in confidence. The Library staff will not disclose the name of a person who has a particular item checked out.
The Library follows the provisions of the United States Copyright Law. Under no circumstances will the Library duplicate or place on reserve, material in violation of the Copyright law. Notices are posted for patrons using self-service copy machines to inform them to adhere to provisions of the Copyright Law.
